Free camping is not free of consequences. The cost moves into planning, fuel, water, waste, access, and the condition of the land after you leave.
Confirm camping is actually allowed
A pin in an app does not make a location legal, open, or suitable today. Check the current land manager, stay limits, fire restrictions, seasonal closures, permits, and posted instructions.
Research the last few miles
Look for recent information about washboard, sand, mud, grades, branches, narrow turns, and turnaround space. Compare it with the length, clearance, weight, and traction limits of your setup.
Know your resource window
Count usable water, food, fuel, battery, propane, waste capacity, and weather margin. Plan the exit errands before settling in.
Keep an exit path
Weather can turn a passable road into a trap. Park for a clean departure, watch forecasts, and avoid relying on one route when conditions are uncertain.
Leave the place easier to use
Use durable surfaces, contain wastewater, respect quiet and spacing, pack out waste, and do not publish fragile sites carelessly.
